Problems With My First Diaper :-(

Here is my first diaper being put to the test. I have two cotton poly terry burp cloths inside, I think that the liners are supposed to be 100% poly which is surprising to me but the problem here is that the diaper inner fabric isn't absorbing the liquid at all. It beads up, in this case it became a pool and leaked out the leg of the diaper. Heather was a suburb assistant, through the whole experiment. I dried the diaper and this time I used a 100% cotton insert, it absorbed somewhat better but the diaper inner material seems to be water resistant. Its been washed in hot water to seal the holes from the needles and I thought to remove any residues. My next test involves and actual test subject (not a water balloon), luckily my neighbor has a six month old and she uses cloth diapers so she has some experience. I just don't want to make 23 more diapers if this diaper inner fabric won't do the job it's supposed to. I will let you know how the next leg of my adventures in diaper making goes.

It sounds like it just needs to be "stripped".
Cloth diapers have to be stripped from time to time to remove build up and such.
When I do it, I wash in hot with a little bit or original blue dawn dish soap, and then do hot rinses until there are no more bubbles.
That should take care of any residu left on the microchamois.

I'll ask on diaperswappers.com and with the KCK group and I'll see what they say.

Oh, and was it washed with any fabric softener?
Fabric softener will do that too, it gunks up the fabric making it repel.

Sorry, just thought of another question, what kind of detergent was used?

Ok, I got some replies.
Most brand new diapers need to be washed a few times before use to make sure there is no build up of detergents, or residu from the fabric.

It probably does need to be stripped, to make sure there is no build up whatsoever. What kind of detergent was used with it, and were there any extra rinse cycles?
To make sure it's completely stripped, wash on hot with something like dawn dish soap if you have some, if not, use as basic of a detergent as you have, the less "extra" ingrdients in it, the better, extra stuff like softeners, brighteners, etc.

Then rinse with hot water until there are no more bubbles coming out of it. Sometiems it takes me 2 to 3 extra rinses to get all the suds out, the suds are detergent build up.

Once all the suds are out, dry on hot or medium, or hang to dry (the dryer is what will seal the holes in the PUL made while sewing.)

That should take care of any build up in the fabric. But then also, people are ssying that the compression of the fabric from the baby wearing it will also make a difference. Test it out with compression, like press down on the water with your hand, simulating a baby wearing it.

It shouldnt matter what kind of insert you have in there, even if there is nothing in there to absorb, the water should still be able to go through the inner fabric.
I hope that helps!
